I’ve always been drawn to quirky nooks, attic bedrooms, oversized windows, muted tones in paint colors… not to mention all the built ins and wall trim you can fit into one room. You, too? Now, we finally know what to call that wholesome, lived in home decor style! Woo!
If you’re looking to add a little more character and coziness to your home, I have a few tips for you today. I’ve been working towards this cozy cottage style aesthetic ever since we moved into our second home 4 years ago. Our home has great bones with a semi open floor plan, smaller (cozy) room sizes, and quirky details like vaulted ceilings in the master bathroom and curved stairs to the second floor attic style bedrooms. To me, cottage style is about creating a space that’s inviting and comfortable, filled with pieces that tell a story. Before we jump into the tips, let’s clarify what cottage style means. It can go by many different nuances including the ever trendy “cottagecore”, country chic, English cottage style, country cottage style, traditional, old cottage, old world style or any variation thereof. Ultimately, at its core, this design approach is:
- Timeless: It’s not about following trends. Instead, it’s rooted in classic design elements that never go out of style!
- Cozy and Comfortable: A cottage-style living room feels lived-in and welcoming—perfect for curling up with a good book or enjoying time with family. Like visiting your grandma’s house in the summer and you know she’ll have fresh pie in the windowsill and somehow her house always smells like cinnamon or baking spices.
- Collected: Think mismatched but cohesive furniture, vintage finds, and décor that looks like it’s been lovingly curated over time.
- Rich in Texture: Patterns, soft fabrics, and natural materials work together to create depth and warmth.

Cottage-style furniture is all about comfort and character. I highly suggest finding furniture items with extra stuffing or a lovely shape that’s especially pleasing to the eye. If you’re shopping for new or new to you pieces, look for these key elements:
- Classic shapes: roll-arm loveseats, wingback chairs, or even a slipcovered sofa would be great for a cottage style home.
- Dark wood tones: Furniture with rich, warm finishes like walnut or mahogany fits perfectly into a cottage-style room. Many antique and vintage furniture pieces will have the darker toned wood already so keep an eye on your local thrift stores and antique shops for the best finds. Facebook marketplace is also a solid option for online thrifting!
But here’s the thing: You don’t have to replace your furniture to achieve the look! Work with what you already have by adding slipcovers, throws, or cushions to soften more modern or mismatched pieces. For example:
- Got a plain couch? Or a leather sofa? (me too!) Add a floral or gingham throw blanket and a few plump pillows in varying textures. Voila! You now have a cottage style sofa. This can be such an easy way to change things out seasonally as well for a fresh vibe in your home while still maintaining the cozy lived in look you love.
- Have a coffee table that feels too sleek? Layer it with a vintage tray, a stack of books, and a vase of fresh flowers to create that collected feel.

- Knit or woven throws: Toss them on the back of a chair or draped over the sofa for instant coziness. These are also easy to find second hand at thrift shops and it truly evokes a sense of calm and history when added to any space.
- Classic checks: You can never go wrong with a checkered table cloth or gingham style drapes in neutral hues.
- Block prints: These are having a trendy moment and making quite the comeback this year! I love finding throw pillows or cafe curtains with a beautiful and feminine block style print. Classy and so timeless!
Tip – Don’t be afraid to mix patterns! In a cottage-style room, florals, plaids, and solids can all live harmoniously. The key is to stick to a cohesive color palette to tie everything together.
3. Incorporate Antiques and Thrifted Finds
Cottage style thrives on character, and nothing adds more character than a well-loved antique or a charming thrifted piece. If you’re new to thrifting, start small with items like:
- Side tables: Look for dark wood tones or tables with turned legs for a classic cottage look. I’ve found some beautiful old pie tables for as low as $5 in secondhand shops so these can be super budget friendly while adding a touch of charm to your space.
- Lamps: Vintage ceramic or brass lamps with soft fabric shades add warmth and nostalgia. You could also source the lamp bases and shades separately. I do this often!
- Décor pieces: Think old books, brass candlesticks, or a vintage mirror to hang above the mantel. I have a plethora of vintage decor items throughout my home and I just adore each and every one of them. Plus, the old saying that “they just don’t make them like they used to” I’ve found to be so true. brass candlesticks will last forever! Old frames are so unique and add a touch of whimsy to any space and are typically made of solid wood, not cork board or something that will break when a stray toy accidently knocks it off the wall. Nope, my old frames are solid!
If thrifting feels overwhelming, start with items that you’re naturally drawn to. Don’t worry about creating a perfectly curated space overnight. The beauty of cottage style is that it evolves as you find pieces you love!
Above are some of the smaller items to begin with if you’re a complete novice to thrifting but for those who aren’t afraid to “go big or go home” I would absolutely recommend a larger antique or vintage furniture piece to create a solid focal point in your space. Solid wood furniture has and will continue to stand the test of time and can be super budget friendly when talking about vintage pieces.
Don’t be afraid to think creatively with the furniture pieces you find and fall in love with either! Just because it is labeled as a buffet does not mean it has to go in the dining room. It could also make an excellent TV hutch in the living room or storage cabinet for the play room. I personally have an old granite top bar cabinet in my entryway as a foyer table (seen above). It works wonderfully for our needs in this season of life! Perhaps one day it will be a lovely bar again but for now, it houses our sunglasses, keys, and family photos.
Depending greatly upon how it’s decorated, many different furniture pieces can serve multiple purposes.

Not to mention the many benefits plants provide to keep the air in your home as clean and fresh as possible! Here are a few easy ideas for how to incorporate house plants into your space to help you achieve the vintage, cottage vibe:
- Place a potted fern or pothos trailing plant on a side table or bookshelf.
- Display fresh flowers (or high-quality faux ones!) in a vintage vase or mason jar as often as possible.

- For more impact, try your hand at nurturing a fiddle leaf fig. They certainly had their moment in the spotlight a few years ago and for good reason! I have grown several over the years and found them to be incredibly easy to care for. My largest fig now is reaching up to our second story windows and is quite the conversation starter.
If you’re short on space, hanging planters or small pots on windowsills can add that natural cottage vibe without taking up valuable floor space. The hanging macrame plant holders can also add a touch of texture and interest to your living space.

I’ve tried my hand at a number of gallery walls over the years and the main thing to keep in mind when attempting to curate one is to retain balance in your art pieces. I would also suggest taking your time with this feat to ensure it comes together as organically as possible with items that truly speak to you.
A few simple tips for creating one:
- Use different frame styles and finishes (wood, brass, or painted) for a collected look.
- Incorporate vintage mirrors, plates, or small woven baskets for texture.
- Add artwork that feels nostalgic—floral still lifes, pastoral scenes, or watercolor landscapes are perfect for cottage vibes.
- Keep your color scheme in mind as your choose art pieces, if you choose a piece that is boldly orange in a room full of muted hues, it will stick out like a sore thumb in the worst way. Be conscious of this as you curate your collections!
