Think handcrafted carved wood and velvet lined drawers with dovetail joints that will likely hold up for another 100 years. Not like the glued together veneered pieces you’ll find in stores today. You can often find higher-quality pieces for a fraction of the price of new, cheaply made furniture.

Finding the perfect pieces can be an so much fun! Especially if you enjoy a good treasure hunt. 😉 Here are some tried-and-true places to start your search:

1. Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is a treasure trove for vintage finds. You can search locally, filter by category, and even negotiate prices. Set alerts for specific items you’re looking for, like a claw foot dining table or a mid-century modern credenza. Looking for a buffet with mirrored backdrop? I bet you’ll find it. Seeking something specific like a leather chesterfield sofa or even a solid wood victorian mantel? Yep, I’ve found those too. Seek and ye shall find, my friend. 

2. Local Antique Stores

Your local antique shop is a curated haven of historical pieces. While prices can vary, many stores offer fair deals and occasional sales! Plus, you can often learn more about the history of a piece from knowledgeable shop owners which adds a layer of interest to any piece. 

Pro tip: I would suggest heading further off the beaten path for these antiquing trips. In my experience, any antique shops in a heavily populated area are filled with overpriced items and even knockoffs or random resale items that aren’t actually vintage at all. It has rarely been worth my time to venture into an antique mall for example. One that has hundreds of vendors and placed right in the middle of a higher class area with millions of residents. Skip that one – drive 30 minutes away to the mom and pop shop with decent prices and fascinating finds. It’s worth the trip, I promise!

3. Thrift Shops

Don’t underestimate thrift stores! And in this case, any old thrift store will do, the ones in highly populated areas are actually usually the ones with the best items! So, opposite of my advice for the antique stores – go where the population is high and there are higher end homes right around the corner. With a little patience and persistence, you’re sure to find many gems here! While it might take some digging, you can uncover some of the best items for a fraction of the cost. Be prepared to visit regularly since inventory changes frequently. Pro tip: establish a friendly relationship with the shop owner and let them know if you’re looking for something specific such as a small 3 drawer dresser or brass table lamp for example. They can shoot you a quick text and set it aside for you to pick up later!

4. Estate Sales

Estate sales are gold mines for high-quality furniture at great prices. Check local listings online or in newspapers for upcoming sales in your area. Arrive early for the best selection or go later for potential discounts. While I can’t frequent estate sales as often as I’d like with small children in tow, these truly are worth the time if you spot one driving by or know of anything coming up – it certainly wont hurt to pop in and see what they have! Note that often times estate sales will not allow children due to breakable items or will have specific hours to go – be mindful of this in your planning. 

How to Incorporate Antiques Into Your Home

Once you’ve found some beautiful pieces you love, it’s time to make them work in your space. Here’s how to incorporate antique styles into your home:

1. Start Small

If you’re new to antiques, ease into it by starting with smaller items like end tables, mirrors, or a comfy wing-backed arm chair. Take it slow and be intentional with the new (to you) items you’re bringing into your home and incorporating into your living space.  These less intrusive pieces can add charm without overwhelming your existing decor.

2. Mix Old and New

Create balance by pairing your fresh finds with modern elements. For example, a vintage wooden dresser can look stunning in a room with contemporary art and a sleek rug. This contrast keeps your space feeling fresh and avoids looking like a museum. It will add to the “collected” look and add just the right amount of interest. You don’t have to have a traditional living room to incorporate vintage finds. With a little creativity, your modern home can look amazing with vintage living room furniture or a leather topped desk in your home office. If you love it, I’ll bet there’s a way to mis and match with your current home decor for a truly unique vibe. 

3. Focus on Functionality

Choose antiques that serve a purpose in your home, never collect just for the sake of having random vintage wares strewn about. Doing so will make your home just feel cluttered and that is not going to serve you well. This is where your intentionality really comes into play. If you found a beautiful leather topped coffee table for example but you have small children at home – it may not be the best fit right now. Let that one go and find something that has pull out drawers for storage and a solid top for coloring with the littles or family game nights. A sturdy dining table with a leaf for entertaining, a spacious armoire to store homeschool books or kids’ dress up clothes in the bonus room, or a comfortable lounge chair can blend charm with practicality.

Each room of our house has a somewhat unexpected antique piece of furniture to really anchor the space and I love how it adds so much charm and depth to our otherwise builder grade home.

Our living room has a vintage buffet that currently serves as our TV stand and houses board games and various arts and crafts for the kids. The entryway has an antique bar in lue of entry table and it has served us very well for the past few years. Keep your color tones complimentary and you should be good to go.
