There’s just something about slow Sunday mornings that calls for baking. Be it pancakes and muffins, or my kid’s all time favorite – banana bread.
Maybe it’s the quiet, maybe it’s the extra cup of coffee, or maybe it’s the four overly ripe bananas sitting on the counter that no one wants to eat—but everyone knows exactly what they’re meant for.
This is what I have affectionately deemed: Esme’s Banana Bread. I chose to name this sweet recipe after my youngest daughter because she will tell anyone she meets that her favorite food is mom’s banana bread.
It does help that she’s also the sweetest little person to ever walk the Earth. Who better to name this sweet treat after?

Why Banana Bread?
It’s the kind of recipe that doesn’t require a trip to a specialty store, a stand mixer, or even full focus (because let’s be honest, kids are usually involved in the baking around here). It’s simple, forgiving, and just sweet enough to feel like a treat without tipping into full dessert territory.
We started making this recipe together when my kids went through a sudden banana strike. They went from eating 3-4 bananas a day to not wanting them at all! So, we had a ton of overripe bananas to use up. Sound familiar?
This is one of those recipes your kids can genuinely help with—not just “watch from a stool,” but actually mash, pour, stir, and sneak a chocolate chip or two along the way.
Why You’ll Love This Banana Bread
- It’s incredibly easy—no fancy techniques or equipment needed here
- Perfect for using up overripe bananas (less food waste!)
- Soft, moist, and just the right amount of sweet
- A great first baking recipe for kids
- Makes your house smell like you’ve got your life together (might be my favorite part).

Ingredients
- 3-5 very ripe bananas (the spottier, the better)
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon of cinnamon (optional)
- Pinch of salt
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- Optional: 1/2 cup chocolate chips or chopped nuts
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a loaf pan OR an 8×8 casserole dish (my personal preference).
- In a large bowl, mash the bananas—this is where little hands can come in and work their magic. Chunky or smooth, it all works. No need to be too precise with this one and it works those fine motor skills!
- Stir in the melted butter.
- Add sugar, egg, and vanilla. Mix until combined.
- Sprinkle in the baking soda and salt, then stir.
- Add the flour and mix gently until just combined (no need to overthink it).
- Fold in chocolate chips or nuts if you’re using them.
- Pour into the loaf pan and sprinkle a bit of cane sugar over the top for a nice crust.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Let it cool just enough so you don’t burn your tongue… then slice and enjoy.

A Little Sunday Tradition
This banana bread has a way of turning an ordinary morning into something that feels a bit more special. Kids crowding around the counter, flour on the floor, someone arguing over who gets to lick the spoon—it’s messy, it’s imperfect, and it’s kind of the whole point.
If you’re looking for a low-effort, high-reward recipe to start a simple family tradition, this might just be it.
And if your bananas aren’t quite ripe yet? Give it a day or two. The “Sunday” part of this recipe is completely optional.
Thank you for stopping by!
