In today’s fast paced digital world, homemaking is considered an art form — and should be pursued as such. It is a delicate balance between taking care of your family, nurturing your space, and ensuring your own well-being. I consider homemaking to be a feminine hobby in and of itself! Your home should feel like a sanctuary that you have personally designed to suite your own needs. It is a skill to be learned and finessed.
But in the midst of tending to children, managing daily household chores, and keeping things running smoothly for your entire family, it’s easy to lose sight of your personal time and creative outlets. Do you even have any favorite hobbies anymore? What is your response when someone asks you what you do for fun? I’ll wait.

Taking a few moments for yourself each day is vital for your own personal well being and mental health. Interesting hobbies not only provide an outlet for relaxation and creativity, but they also offer mental clarity and rest, which is something we definitely all need! Below are a few fun feminine hobbies perfect for the modern day homemaker and old souls alike — designed to fit seamlessly around your homemaking and childcare routine, while still giving you space to recharge and indulge a bit in your creative side.
1. Knitting or Crochet
Time to grab those knitting needles and try your hand at this useful past time! Both knitting and crochet are timeless, soothing hobbies that can be done while keeping an eye on the little ones or relaxing in the evenings. These needlecrafts allow you to create cozy blankets, stylish scarves, and even adorable baby booties, all while giving you a meditative space to unwind. Research shows that repetitive activities like knitting can reduce stress and anxiety—perfect for keeping your mind calm amidst the hustle of everyday homemaking.
I’ll admit that I haven’t tried my hand at this one myself but it’s on my list! I wish I had taken the time to perfect this new skill during pregnancy but alas, we cannot go back in time yet, can we? If you find yourself in the very beginning stages of your homemaking career, I think this one could be a wonderful hobby that will pay dividends in the future! If you get good enough you could even have a little side business for baby blankets or dog sweaters – whatever your heart fancies.
2. Gardening

This is definitely one of my personal favorites! Whether you have a full backyard or just a few potted plants, gardening is a great way to connect with nature and beautify your home. It’s not only physically engaging but mentally refreshing too to spend time outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine. Studies indicate that spending time with plants boosts your mood and reduces cortisol levels, helping you stay grounded even on the busiest of days.
There are so many options to choose from you can really make this hobby unique to your own wants and needs. I personally prefer to spend my time in a beautiful flower garden. A vegetable garden is a bit more practical and can encourage healthy eating habits as well. Gardening need not take a lot of time or money; although if you’re anything like me, the more time spent in the garden the better! There’s something magical about watching things grow and and change through the seasons.
This is actually a fun activity that you can get the kids involved with as well, it need not be a solo affair if you don’t have any alone time some days. Bring them out with you and assign a simple task such as weed pulling, watering or throwing seeds down in an unused pot or bit of dirt. I’ve even buried random items such as small toys or interestingly shaped rocks for my toddler to dig for. It’s always a hit with them and buys me some time to do what I need to in the garden.
3. Reading
There’s something incredibly nurturing about curling up with a good book. Whether you’re into novels, self-improvement, or faith-based reads, taking 20 minutes a day to lose yourself in the pages can be fabulously rejuvenating. Reading is also linked to increased empathy, which can be particularly beneficial for those tender moments in motherhood. I find myself partial to self improvement books in my current season of life. However, I used to be a voracious reader of novels and short stories and found them to be soothing to the soul.

Young women should especially take note to never underestimate the power of a good book in one’s hand. This may be one of the best hobbies to pick up (if we’re taking score – which we of course are not) as it can lead to so many other good things in life! Give yourself the gift of free time either right before bed at night or first thing upon waking to indulge in a good book. You will never regret reading instead of scrolling mindlessly on your phone! If you are more social than I, perhaps a book club would be a good way to open your mind to new reads.
4. Baking
While this particular hobby is simply not my forte, I know many who do enjoy the ancient practice of baking bread or caring for a sourdough starter. Baking doesn’t just produce delicious treats for your family; it’s also a therapeutic process for some. Kneading dough, mixing ingredients, and decorating cookies can be incredibly calming and the perfect hobby for an aspiring pastry chef! The satisfaction of creating new recipes or perfectly re-creating your beloved grandmother’s homemade buttermilk biscuits can be so rewarding, not only for you and your family but for generations to come.
As a stay at home mom, I have found this to be a necessary skill to have, whether I find joy in it or not. If you are partial to spending time in the kitchen, this could be the perfect hobby for you. Plus, the sweet reward at the end is always a joy! Many women find baking to be a creative outlet that satisfies both their artistic and nurturing instincts. Or in my case, can really help you brush up on your problem-solving skills – by figuring out where in the world you went wrong enough for the cookies to come out hard as a rock – again. Oi!
5. Decorating Your Home
I’ll admit this is probably my very favorite past time. I find it to be calming and so refreshing to walk into a room that has been recently redecorated. The lovely art of decorating and nurturing your home environment can be so life giving to you and everyone who lives in your home. And, no, it does not have to cost a fortune to decorate your home beautifully! Often times, it is more about trying new things and rearranging what you already have.
I like to rearrange the artwork seasonally or try a new furniture arrangement at least once a year. This is something that does not have to cost you anything at all, you just need to take a good look around your space and try to see it in a new light.

Pro tip: start by decluttering your space and you could even make some money from this lovely hobby. Sell the things you no longer love or need in your home. I’ve had luck listing on Facebook Marketplace or in our local neighborhood pages. For tips on decluttering, check out my post here!
6. Journaling or Creative Writing
Journaling is a powerful tool for mental clarity and emotional release. Whether you’re documenting your homemaking journey, reflecting on your day, or simply expressing gratitude for the little things in your everyday life, writing can provide immense mental relief. Creative writing—like poetry or short stories—allows you to tap into your imagination, giving you a playful outlet amid daily responsibilities. A lot of women I know personally swear that writing is not only therapeutic, but a fabulous tool for personal growth, emotional expression, and one of the best ways to unwind after a trying day.
7. Horseback Riding
If you have more of an adventurous spirit, horseback riding can be a relaxing and rewarding feminine hobby. There’s something incredibly special about the bond between a horse and it’s rider. Of course, I know from experience how expensive this particular hobby can be, which is why it’s so far down on my list. However, if you have the wiggle room in your budget and a bit of spare time to dedicate one or two evenings a month to horse riding it can improve both your mental and physical health. Relaxing though it may be, it can also double as a great workout! The amount of up-downs required for a solid trot will have you feeling a little sore but fulfilled after you’ve finished. Plus, what a fabulous way to spend a little extra time in the great outdoors!

8. Yoga
Yoga is a gentle, feminine practice that combines movement with mindfulness. It’s perfect for finding balance and relaxation when you’re juggling a full day of childcare and homemaking. Even just a few minutes of stretching can improve flexibility, relieve tension, and help you feel more present.
Make this a regular practice as an easy way to unwind and embrace your feminine spirit. I’ve found a few programs that I personally love for yoga and other great exercise options but even a quick Youtube search can get you started on the right foot! Maybe begin with a very gentle “yoga in bed” search to start or end your day from the comfort of your own bed. You will feel so much better afterwards! After all, stretching is always a good idea! 😉
9. Calligraphy or Hand Lettering
Calligraphy is a beautiful, calming art form that allows you to create stunning letters and designs. It’s a slow, focused activity that can be done in short bursts throughout the day, and it’s perfect for making personalized cards, decorating your home, or even starting a side hustle. Plus, there’s something uniquely feminine and elegant about the flow of a calligraphy pen. This would be a great new skill to try out for anyone. Just think of the gorgeous Christmas tags you’ll be making this year!
10. Flower Arranging
There’s a real art to creating beautiful floral arrangements, and it can be a delightful hobby for those who love aesthetics and nature. Whether you’re gathering blooms from your garden or picking some up from the store, arranging flowers allows you to bring color, beauty, and freshness into your home, giving you a lovely creative outlet while brightening up your space. I would encourage every homemaker to give this hobby a try, I think you may be surprised at just how lovely the results can be with a little creativity and tinkering.
Prioritizing Self-Care as a Homemaker
Remember, the most important thing about any hobby is that it brings you joy. Homemaking can be an all-consuming job, but taking time for activities that inspire and calm you is essential for maintaining balance. These hobbies, whether you’re stitching, stretching, or simply enjoying a good book, can seamlessly fit into your day and provide a well-earned break from your busy schedule.
If you seek something a bit more thrilling to get you out of your comfort zone and encourage personal growth, horseback riding or a ladies workout class offered in your local area may be the best option for you.

Many of the above ideas are also perfectly suitable to be performed in your own home which means no need for child care, transportation, or any other inconveniences to hinder your goals. So, let yourself unwind and recharge, knowing that by doing so, you’re nurturing both yourself and your home. No one can pour from an empty cup and you should not exile yourself to a life lived without beautiful hobbies to refill that cup! A good time really can be had by all! Embrace the divine feminine energy of flower arranging or yoga and have a little fun with it, there is absolutely no need for perfection in these pursuits. The goal is to unwind and relax, nothing more.
I truly hope you’ve found some new interests today. Don’t forget to take 2 minutes to add them to your weekly calendar so they don’t get lost among your to-do’s!
Here’s to finding peace, beauty, and creativity in the everyday moments of homemaking. Until next time friends.
Olivia

This post is so sweet, and intentional Olivia! I would add “embroidery” alongside knitting or crocheting!
