Hi friends! Welcome to Homemaking 101. This year, we are taking the steps to curate our ideal home. If you already have a vision in your head of how you’d like for your home to look and feel, great! If not, no problem! I can help you to hone in on all of the ideas floating around your Pinterest boards or random saved images on your phone so we can narrow down your home style. It’s time to start truly curating a home you can be proud of!
So, what’s the first step in creating your ideal home? If you know me at all you knew this was coming. Step 1 is to DECLUTTER! You must first remove the excess in your life to make space for the things you truly treasure. By decluttering and simplifying your home first, you can then start to move on and create the ethos and sanctuary you SO deserve.

Here I’ll walk you through the starting point that is absolutely necessary to truly curate the home of your dreams. We are going to turn your home into a place that evokes your personality and is filled with only the things you love or find to be useful or beautiful.
If you’re wanting to give your home a fresh new vibe for the new year, are just starting out with your home design journey, or are interested in truly curating your home decor collections to reflect your best self and your family’s ethos – you’ve come to the right place!
Decluttering Your Home

The foundation of any good design is having a clean slate as a starting point. From there, you can really start to move in the right direction with your vision. Decluttering and removing the excess is so crucial to making your home feel like a sanctuary for you and your family.
There are many many reasons to declutter your home, including reducing stress, help you maintain focus (in all areas of your life), assist in creating a cohesive and calming space, and ensuring that your home feels like a hug when you walk through the door instead of a burden on your shoulders. Your home should lift you up, not weigh you down!
Our focus during The Home Edit will be to slowly move from room to room as we purge the excess that has accumulated in your home. We will be taking our time here and doing one room each week (or take as long as you need, there is no rush!). You’ll need to be BRUTAL in your decision making of what stays and what goes. Again – we are laying the foundation of your new home design over the course of this Home Edit. It is not to be taken lightly!
Our Home Edit challenge will be more difficult for some but I see that as all the more reason to lean into this challenge. It is wholly necessary if you want to create the vision you have in your head of what your home could be. Or, if you aren’t completely sure yet what that vision looks like, decluttering is best the starting point!
The Home Edit – Room By Room
Throughout The Home Edit series, we will be tackling the following areas of your home:

Living Room / Family Room
Kitchen / Pantry
Dining Area
Bedrooms
Bathroom
Basement
Garage
Laundry Room
We will also be decluttering and editing these areas along the way: books, clothing, and paper piles.
As we go through the series, the steps we take to tackle each area will be very simple and we will repeat them in each new area of our home. I’ll be doing this right along with you!
Below you’ll find the simple 5 step process we’ll be following for each space we work on during this challenge.
- Purge
- Assess
- Observe
- Evaluate
- Design
We’ll be diving into much more detail for each of those 5 steps as we move through your home from room to room. You will feel so much better about your home (and yourself) when we’ve completed the Home Edit. I’m so dang excited to get started!

I’ll be adding a new post every Friday so be sure to check back next week! Let’s go y’all!
Olivia
